Welcome to Juab County! - Ute Stampede Rodeo
Juab County

Web Site
Majestic Juab County, sometimes called the "Key County", is located in Central Utah. The name Juab comes from the Ute Indian word "yoab" meaning "level plain". Nephi is the largest city in the county, and is also the County Seat. In addition to being the home of the annual Ute Stampede Rodeo in July, Nephi was home to the first baseball game in Utah and some claim, the first game West of the Mississippi.

Nephi was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1851. The pioneers were attracted to the rich soil for farming. But in 1869, everything changed and by the turn of the century, Nephi was known as "Little Chicago". Although Nephi today bears little resemblance to "Little Chicago", it continues to grow and prosper and is still an important crossroad in Utah.

Large gold nuggets were found in the Tintic Mountains in 1869 and hundreds moved in to stake their claims. By 1870, the tent city was called Eureka. On the other side of the mountain, another large discovery was made. The city that grew there was called Mammoth. However, like other boom towns, when the ore ran out, people moved away leaving the mining towns deserted. Today, you can relive the past by visiting these historic sites.

Residents and visitors can enjoy a diverse range of activities and spectacular sights. You can sample the history as well as the outdoor activities. You can experience the excitement of a rodeo during Nephi's Ute Stampede in July or the anticipation of the gold miners of Eureka during the Tintic Silver Festival the third weekend in August. Come and visit Juab County, where the relaxed, friendly atmosphere can make a day or a weekend a truly memorable vacation!
