Carbon County was settled originally by the second wave of hard working Mormon immigrants, primarily of Scandanavian extraction. It was hard country to tame, but they made it a wonderful place to live. Carbon County, however, soon became home to many nationalities.
These people came to build the railroads and work the coal mines. It is here that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, along with the Wild Bunch, robbed the Castle Gate Mine Offices in 1898. At last count, Carbon County boasted 32 nationalities represented in its population people. It is as if a little bit of New York City was placed in the West. Castle Country has the most cosmopolitan outlook of any area in the State. There are a wide variety of religious cultural and educational opportunities in the area. The people are hard working, and coal mining has historically been the chief occupation.
